Do’s and Don’ts of Getting Highlights

When the sun starts shining consistently we notice that more of our clients have the itch to get highlights. While we are all about sun-kissed-looking hair, we also things important to walk you through some of the do’s and don’t of adding any kind of color or bleach to your hair. When highlights are done right they can flatter your face structure, but when done wrong can turn into a brassy nightmare. We’re here to make sure that doesn’t happen.

DO FRAME THE FACE:

Just like adding soft layers can frame the face beautifully, so can highlights when done right. The key is having your stylist place them right. The trick is that highlights should be darker and sparser at the root the get progressively lighter to the end.

DON’T ADD A LOT OF COLORS

The mistake that many can make when wanting to add highlights is going color happy. While we are all about adding dimension, too much variation can look unnatural. Think of it like an equation 3 colors = perfect. One color for the base, one for the highlight, and one for the low-light.

DO stay consistent with the season

While it’s perfectly okay to be a sun-kissed babe in the summer, it can look a little unnatural when the sun is in space during winter. Lighter colors are great for the summer, but more golden deep tones are perfect for the winter. The best way to remember is that in summer everything is bright and light, but in the winter everything is dark and cozy.

don’t go out of skin tone

While highlights aren’t natural, the goal is to make them look that way. Your skin tone has everything to do with that. A common mistake is to go super light, but depending on the natural tones of your skin it can leave you to look gaunt. We will always consider your skin and hair color when deciding what mixture is best for your highlights.

do care for your highlights

Highlights don’t come cheap so treat them that way. We suggest using a deep moisturizing conditioner, and products that have no sulfates and are color friendly. That way your beautiful highlights stay fresh and healthy-looking before your next touch-up.
